John Grimshaw Wilkinson lived at 5 Carberry Terrace. He had lost his sight aged 22. A friend would take him to Temple Newsam, where he began exploring the textures, tastes and shapes of leaves using his tongue. In the course of the years he became so expert that leading botanists would seek his help. He was made Master of Science in the University of Leeds. As the Blind Botanist he also had exceptional hearing and smell and could even recognise many insects by the sound they made.
